In the world of the NFL, the Los Angeles Chargers are facing a bit of a conundrum when it comes to their cornerbacks group. The departure of J.C. Jackson and Michael Davis has left a void that needs to be filled. Asante Samuel Jr is the only cornerback who is a guaranteed starter, but the question remains: who will line up opposite him on the field?
“Asante has been a reliable player for us over the years,” said Chargers coach. “But we need to solidify the other starting spot.”
The Chargers did make some moves to address the cornerback position in the off-season. Kristian Fulton was added in free agency, bringing some versatility with his ability to play both outside and in the slot. The team also drafted two rookies, Tarheeb Still and Cam Hart, in the fifth round of the Draft.
“These young guys have a lot of potential,” said a team scout. “If one of them can step up and take on a starting role, it would be a game-changer for us.”
Ja’Sir Taylor, the slot corner, is also in the mix but needs to show more consistency to secure his spot on the roster. Deane Leonard is another player fighting for a place on the team, with some impressive performances in practice catching the eye of the coaching staff.
“All these guys will be battling it out in training camp,” said the coach. “We’re looking for someone to step up and take that second starting spot.”
With the season approaching, all eyes will be on the Chargers cornerbacks group. The pieces are there, now it’s just a matter of putting them together to form a solid unit. The upcoming weeks will be crucial in determining the fate of the cornerback group and how they will fare in the upcoming season.
