The Tennessee Titans have been dealt a blow with the unexpected retirement of Saahdiq Charles, their projected starting right guard. The Titans placed Charles on the reserve/retired list, as reported by Turron Davenport of ESPN. Charles, who had signed a one-year contract worth $1.5 million with the team, leaves a void in the offensive line that the Titans now need to fill.
As the news of Charles’ retirement broke, questions arose about who could potentially step up to replace him. Dillon Radunz, who was slated to be Charles’ backup right guard, is seen as a potential candidate for the role. Radunz has been practicing in that position throughout the offseason, which could give him the edge in familiarity. Another option is for Daniel Brunskill, the current backup center, to move back to his old position. However, it is believed that Offensive Line Coach Bill Callahan may choose to promote Radunz to the starting spot.
With the Titans currently possessing the 12th-most cap space in the league, there are possibilities for them to explore both internally and externally to fill the vacancy left by Charles. One external option could be Halapoulivaati Vaitai, who was released by the Lions in the past offseason due to injuries and inconsistency. Vaitai’s injuries have plagued his career and may deter the Titans from pursuing him.
Another familiar face that the Titans may consider is David Quessenberry, who has experience with the Chargers and Texans. Quessenberry, who was the starting center for the Texans in 2022, is currently a free agent after spending the 2023 season on injured reserve. While he has worked out with the Dolphins, nothing concrete has materialized yet.
Additionally, the Titans could look at Don Barclay, who spent some time with the team as an undrafted free agent in the past. Barclay, who has had stints with the Packers and Texans, joined the Panthers in 2023. At 32, his age may be a factor in the decision-making process.
The Titans could also consider Jamarco Jones, who has spent his entire career with the Seattle Seahawks. At 28, Jones is younger compared to other free agents and has experience playing both right guard and left guard. His familiarity with the Seahawks’ system could make him an attractive option for the Titans.
As the Titans navigate the aftermath of Charles’ retirement, they will need to carefully assess their options to ensure the stability of their offensive line. The search for a new starting right guard is underway, and the team will need to make a decision soon to solidify their lineup for the upcoming season.
