As we approach the final week of preseason football, the Los Angeles Chargers are gearing up to make some tough decisions regarding their roster composition. With final cuts looming, the coaching staff must carefully evaluate each player’s performance to determine who will make the cut and who will be searching for a new team.
The quarterback position is always a hot topic of conversation, and this year is no different. Despite a less than stellar preseason showing, Easton Stick seems to have secured his spot as the backup behind Justin Herbert. With Max Duggan and Casey Bauman already cut, Stick’s competition now comes in the form of Luis Perez. Perez, a recent addition to the team, has shown promise in his limited time with the Chargers. Head coach Jim Harbaugh may opt to keep three quarterbacks on the roster, with Perez likely taking the third spot.
Moving on to the running backs, the rotation seems to be taking shape with J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards, Kimani Vidal, and Jaret Patterson all likely securing spots on the roster. The wide receiver position, on the other hand, still has some decisions to be made. While players like Josh Palmer, D.J. Chark, Quentin Johnston, and Ladd McConkey have likely solidified their spots, the battle for WR6 is still ongoing.
Jaelen Gill has impressed as a kick returner, but Derius Davis’ prowess in that role may give him the edge. This leaves Brenden Rice and Simi Fehoko vying for the final wide receiver spot. Rice, despite a lack of production in the preseason, has been seeing significant playing time and targets. Fehoko, on the other hand, has shown flashes of potential and may find himself on the practice squad.
In the tight end department, Hayden Hurst, Will Dissly, and Donald Parham are all expected to make the final cut. With the roster coming into focus, the Chargers will soon have to make the tough decisions that come with final cuts. Stay tuned as we await the official announcement of the 53-man roster.
