Despite being added to the injury report earlier in the week, the Los Angeles Chargers will have their starting quarterback, Justin Herbert, available for Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, as reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The team has confirmed this news, quelling any concerns about Herbert’s status.
The uncertainty arose when Herbert mentioned on Friday that he was struggling with a high ankle sprain. Although he missed Wednesday’s practice, Herbert was able to participate in a limited capacity on Thursday. However, his absence from Friday’s session raised doubts about his availability for Week 3. Fortunately, on Saturday, NFL Network Insiders Tom Pelissero, Mike Garafolo, and Rapoport revealed that the Chargers were optimistic about Herbert suiting up against the Steelers.
In the previous game, Herbert’s performance included completing 14-of-20 passes for 130 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. While it was not his most prolific showing, it was enough to secure a victory, making it the game with the fewest pass yards in Herbert’s NFL career.
Now with Herbert officially cleared to play, he has the chance to achieve a milestone for the Chargers. If he leads the team to a win, he will be the first quarterback for the franchise to start a season 3-0 since Drew Brees accomplished the feat back in 2002, according to NFL Research.
“We’re excited to have Justin out there leading our team,” said Chargers head coach Brandon Staley. “He’s shown great resilience and determination in dealing with this injury, and we have full confidence in his ability to perform at a high level on Sunday.”
Herbert echoed his coach’s sentiments, stating, “I’m feeling good and ready to go. I trust our medical staff and coaches to put me in the best position to succeed. I’m looking forward to the challenge of facing a tough Steelers defense and helping our team come out on top.”
The Chargers hope that Herbert’s presence on the field will provide the spark needed to continue their early-season success and solidify their position as a contender in the AFC. As the young quarterback prepares to lead his team into battle, all eyes will be on him to deliver another standout performance and guide the Chargers to victory.
