In the midst of the NFL’s whirlwind of changes with the first head coach swap of the 2024 season, the New York Jets find themselves caught in a standoff with outside linebacker Haason Reddick.
Jets owner Woody Johnson is determined to resolve the holdout situation and has called on Reddick to come down to the team facility to iron out the issues. Johnson’s candid remarks on Reddick created a peculiar moment on a tumultuous day in Gotham. Nevertheless, the owner remains optimistic that Reddick will eventually join the team.
The Jets traded for Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles in late March, but the pass rusher, in search of a new contract, has refused to show up without a revised deal, resulting in a deadlock that has now dragged on into October. Reddick is set to earn $14.25 million in the final year of his current contract.
With four consecutive seasons of posting double-digit sack numbers with three different teams (the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, and Eagles), Reddick’s talent is undeniable. He has even earned Pro Bowl honors during his time with Philly. However, his dissatisfaction with his contract has fueled a trade, and it was expected that negotiations for an extension or restructured deal would have taken place prior to the trade with the Jets. Yet, no agreement was reached, leading to Reddick’s absence and accumulation of fines during both the offseason and now into the regular season.
